A Brief History of Queen of the Rosary College (QRC) Okoyong
Queen of the Rosary College (QRC) Okoyong, located four miles from Mamfe town in Cameroon’s South West Region, stands as one of the most respected girls’ secondary schools in the country. Its story is deeply rooted in faith, discipline, and the long-standing mission of Catholic education in Manyu Division
Origins and Foundation
QRC Okoyong was founded in 1956 by Catholic missionaries, notably the Irish Holy Rosary Sisters. The school was established at Okoyong, a historic mission site that had earlier been evangelized in the late 19th century by Catholic missionaries. Okoyong itself holds special significance in the Catholic Church in Cameroon, having been one of the earliest centers of missionary activity in the region.
The primary aim of the founders was to provide quality education to young girls while instilling strong moral and spiritual values grounded in the Catholic faith. At a time when girls’ education was still limited in many parts of Cameroon, QRC emerged as a pioneering institution.
Growth and Development
Queen of the Rosary College (QRC) Okoyong is a prestigious Catholic girls' school in Cameroon with a legacy spanning over 70 years. Founded by the Holy Rosary Sisters, it has grown from a modest school into a leading institution known for empowering young women.The text highlights four pillars of the QRC experience:

The Anglophone Crisis and Its Impact
Like many institutions in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions, Queen of the Rosary College Okoyong faced a severe setback following the outbreak of the Anglophone Crisis in 2017. The prolonged unrest significantly disrupted academic activities, forcing repeated interruptions to the school calendar and creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear.
Student enrolment dropped drastically as parents withdrew their children for safety reasons. At one point, the situation became so dire that the college was on the brink of closure. The crisis also brought direct damage to the school, with three dormitories set ablaze by armed separatist fighters, further deepening the challenges faced by the institution.
Despite these hardships, QRC Okoyong has shown remarkable resilience. In recent years, a gradual return to stability has encouraged the reopening and normalization of school life. Student numbers are steadily rising again, reflecting renewed confidence among parents and the wider community. Today, the college continues its mission with hope, rebuilding and reclaiming its place as a center of excellence for girls’ education in the region.
